Recipe: Making Krispy Kreme-Style Donuts


  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (around 110°F or 45°C)
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Activate the Yeast:

    • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Mix the Dough:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture with sugar, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
    • Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:

    • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise:

    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Donuts:

    • Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about ½ inch thickness.
    • Use a donut cutter or two different-sized round cookie cutters to cut out donuts and donut holes.
    • Place the cut-out donuts on parchment paper-lined baking sheets, cover them loosely with kitchen towels, and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  6. Fry the Donuts:

    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
    • Carefully add a few donuts to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry each side for about 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown.
    • Remove the fried donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Make the Glaze:

    • In a shallow bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  8. Glaze the Donuts:

    • Dip each donut into the glaze, making sure to coat it completely.
    • Place the glazed donuts on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to allow any excess glaze to drip off.
